Christian Ress

WINEMAKER AND ENTREPRENEUR, BALTHASAR RESS

Christian describes himself not as a winemaker but as an entrepreneur in the wine industry. This includes studying business administration in Wiesbaden, in order not to be too far away from the university in Geisenheim and, if time in Wiesbaden allows, at least to be able to study viticulture as a guest student. Jobs and internships at home and abroad followed, including at Henkell & Söhnlein, the Staatlicher Hofkeller in Würzburg, the German Wine Information Service in New York, the German Wine Information Service in London, and Chateau Durfort Vivens in Margaux.

After joining the family business, he founded other companies and, not least thanks to the strong partners at his side, formed a group of companies with over a hundred employees. He finds that the saying “Doing is like wanting – only crasser!” describes his general attitude quite well.

The FAZ once wrote about the history of Balthasar Ress “Wine was never everything, without wine everything would be nothing.” This is still true for Christan today.

Wine is always the binding bracket for his activities. Incidentally, his extraordinary ideas come to him primarily while traveling – when new, unfamiliar impressions trigger his creativity.

Despite the wide range of activities, the Balthasar Ress wine estate – the oldest company in the group, founded by Christian’s ancestors over 150 years ago – remains his absolute heart’s project, to which he devotes a large part of his working hours.
