Judgment of Paris: 50 Years Later

In 1976, a blind tasting in Paris shocked the wine establishment when California wines outperformed some of France’s most revered producers—reshaping global perceptions of quality and opening a new chapter in modern wine. Fifty years after the tasting that forever changed the wine world, revisit this legendary moment in this special anniversary seminar celebrating the Judgment of Paris.

This commemorative tasting brings together wines and voices inspired by that historic competition, featuring benchmark producers and perspectives spanning both sides of the Atlantic. Guests will explore the enduring influence of iconic California estates including Heitz Cellar, Ridge Vineyards, Freemark Abbey, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, and Château Montelena, alongside distinguished French selections and the regions that helped define fine wine tradition.

Moderated by Wanda Mann, the discussion will feature an expert panel of winery representatives and industry leaders, including Alex Wright, Christina Donley, William Davis, and representatives from North Berkeley Imports and Freemark Abbey. Together, they will examine the legacy of the original tasting, how styles and perceptions have evolved over five decades, and whether the question that changed wine still matters today. A rare opportunity to taste, compare, debate, and celebrate one of wine’s most influential anniversaries.
